Literally translated, the word means embroidery, and it is one of Lucknow&#8217;s best known textile decoration styles. century BC by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Megasthenes\">Megasthenes<\/a>, who mentioned use of flowered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muslin\">muslins<\/a>&nbsp;by Indians. But these embroidered patterns lack any colour, ornamentation or anything spectacular to embellish it.&nbsp;According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laila_Tyabji\">Laila Tyabji<\/a>, chikankari stems from the white-on-white embroidery of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shiraz\">Shiraz<\/a>&nbsp;came to India as part of a culture of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Persians\">Persian<\/a>&nbsp;nobles at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mughal_Empire\">Mughal<\/a>&nbsp;court.&nbsp;There is also a tale that mentions how a traveler taught chikan to a peasant in return of water to drink. The most popular origin story credits&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nur_Jahan\">Noor Jahan<\/a>, Mughal empress and wife of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jahangir\">Jahangir<\/a>, with introducing chikankari to India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Technique<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technique of creation of a chikan work is known as&nbsp;<em>chikankari<\/em>&nbsp;(\u091a\u093f\u0915\u0928\u0915\u093e\u0930\u0940&nbsp;\u0686\u06a9\u0646 \u06a9\u0627\u0631\u06cc). Chikan is a delicate and artfully done hand embroidery on a variety of textile fabric like muslin, silk, chiffon, organza, net, etc. White thread is embroidered on cool, pastel shades of light muslin and cotton garments. Nowadays&nbsp;<em>chikan<\/em>&nbsp;embroidery is also done with coloured and silk threads in colours to meet the fashion trends and keep chikankari up-to-date. Lucknow is the heart of the&nbsp;<em>chikankari<\/em>&nbsp;industry today and the variety is known as&nbsp;<em>Lucknawi chikan<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chikan work in the recent times has adapted additional embellishments like Mukaish, Kamdani, Badla, sequin, bead and mirror work, which gives it a rich look. Chikan embroidery is mostly done on fabrics like cotton, semi-Georgette, pure Georgette, crepe, chiffon, silk and any other fabric which is light and which highlights the embroidery. The fabric cannot be too thick or hard, else the embroidery needle won&#8217;t pierce it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The piece begins with one or more pattern blocks that are used to block-print a pattern on the ground fabric. The embroiderer stitches the pattern, and the finished piece is carefully washed to remove all traces of the printed pattern.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chikan_(embroidery)#cite_note-dusenbury-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The process of&nbsp;<em>chikankari<\/em>&nbsp;includes the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul
